Um, I'm pretty sure I've head the story, though I can't recite it right now. I've never thought of it as a hovel. I've always been proud to know it was the northern most point of the lower 48 states. When in grade school, we live in the state of Maine and kids used to take rulers to maps to try to prove that Maine was the northern most point. But they didn't take into account that maps are flat and the earth is not.
