Please keep sorting this stuff out! It's documenting something that's happened in a lot of places. The complexity of the various processes is part of the strategy of encroachment and it's these "duck bites" that have provided a "death of a thousand cuts" for tribal sovereignty.
You had a sentence in this that jumped out at me. "Encroachment never stopped." I would move your sentence into the present and the future: "Encroachment has never stopped." Sadly too many of our "manifest destiny" citizens believe as long as they "win", taking property and damaging lives of indigenous peoples is acceptable.
Encroachment never stops. Present tense. Encroachment will never stop? I don't want to imagine such a future. I still cling to the belief that if we know better, we can do better.
A formal apology from the president for boarding schools felt like a feather of hope in the long arc of history. That so many voted in 2024 who did not have the right to vote in 1916 is also noteworthy. Maybe elections matter less than all the hype would have us believe.
We will have to judge the meaning of this recent election by the actual outcomes which we have been told to expect we should start to witness in late January. I believe that any authorities who can make policies that influence the health, safety, and welfare of others matter.
A reminder that trust and honor are earned, not awarded. Earned by their actions and not by their words alone. Distrust may be warranted after years of disinformation. Chickens come home to roost.
I so appreciate your research! I have had questions about this history my whole life that family could not answer. You are providing me pieces to our family puzzle and I thank you for sharing!
That makes my heart sing. I remain curious and would love to hear specific questions you still have and whether we can find answers together. I am grateful to have had so many offer up memories, photos, documents and first-hand knowledge about the Warroad community.
Any chance you might have or could make a rough drawing of the roadway easement, floodage area and railway encroachment? Like a satellite image not necessarily in proper location but to offer a visual of degrees of loss? For visual learners?
I wish I had such talents. Finding maps is difficult. Making maps is even harder! The highway and railway run along the eastern edge of the property line and curve west at the top of the property line. The river runs through the middle there and simply got wider as the water levels rose. The loss by these easements is about another 7 acres taken in "duck bites" from Namaypoke's allotment.
I can't add any visuals here in the comments. The original allotment is shown in the two previous posts. in maps. I am searching for ways to make this visual, Heidi, but my limitations as a graphic designer and my inability to point with my fingers at the map make me feel competely incapable of making this any clearer. Of the original 113.95 acres by 1950 there is one 7.2 acre parcel and one 40 acre parcel that remains. What is left now? Nothing. A postage-stamp sized parcel of .1 acre that is Indian burial ground. The rest is all private property. I'm researching the sale of the rest of his land in the mid-1950s now and it is complicated.
I'm not convinced the kind of people who attacked the Capitol on January 6th were seeking trust or honor. They were bored and enjoyed the violence. The writer Joseph O'Neill commented in an interview recently that they saw their choice in the recent election as a choice between four more years of church or four more years of violent entertainment.
This was very provocative and useful especially to those who feel Trump's win was MAGA. Thank you for sharing it with me. I have more I want to share with you (as I always do), but I will send it separately.

"Duck bites" is a great expression for these easements. I'll keep sorting through the documents. The process is hiding in plain sight.

I want to believe the same, but the recent election doesn't make me optimistic.

Thank you as always Jill.

Thanks. Can you remind us what was the original allotment and what’s now left?

Treuer puts a few things in perspective and keeps me curious about what the future will be.
